Top Ten Reasons Fiction Writers Should Read Poetry

I have been reading more poetry lately. Not only have I enjoyed it, I feel as if it helps me as a writer. So these are my Top Ten reasons why fiction writers should read poetry.

10      Poetry is beautiful.

9        Poetry help the writer learn more about the sound of words.

8        Poetry says much in such a small space.

7        There is more variety within poetry than there is in prose.

6        The more poetry we read, the better influence we can be on other writers to read more poetry.

5        Poetry helps expand your vocabulary.

4        By reading poetry, the fiction writer can really learn how to use metaphor.

3        Poetry often asks question and leaves it to the reader to come to an answer.

2        More than any other style of writing, poetry speaks to the human condition.

1        Poetry puts you into the mind of the poet better than prose can do for a fiction writer.

Did I forget poetry is just plain fun? So what else did I leave out? I would love to read about your thoughts on poetry as a fiction writer.

I found this during my late night wanderings online and really appreciated what it had to say. I feel that when it comes to poetry people either love it or they can’t stand it – there doesn’t seem to be much middle ground on the subject. I consider myself to be in the former group. I took multiple poetry classes in college, and although I consider myself to be a writer of prose more often than I see myself as a poet, I have noticed poetry seep into my prose through (what I hope is) lyrical description, and stories seem to seep into my poetry through story telling. I was always much more comfortable writing poetry with characters or some sort of loosely formed plot than I was without those elements. This post has to do with that dichotomy and harmony that I often find in my writing, so I thought I would share it here.

  3. I write about life before, during and after brain surgery. Before, there was poetry. Now, not so much (none). I give this post a highly inspirational award! Because it makes me want to revisit poetry after several years of inactivity in that department. Thanks!

    • This Comment means more to me than any other I have yet been given. Thanks, and I hope the best for you in every way. I post a poem every Tuesday and Friday on this blog, as you may have seen. I really had not planned on posting new poems, but I’ll make a deal with you. Write me a new poem, make it good, and I’ll post it on this blog.
